The 100-Day Campaign
The last couple of weeks have been a little unsettling for expatriates in China, especially those who are living and working here without proper visa and/or official paperwork. It was widely reported over the last two weeks that Beijing began a 100-day campaign to identify and handle illegal foreigners living and working in China, and that campaign has now made its way to Shanghai.
Expat websites (including ShanghaiExpat) have been highlighting the official campaign since it began last month, and a few have reported that a raid took place at The Apartment on Yongfu Lu just last week.
So what does this mean for expats who are here legally? Well, it means that you can still be questioned by the police and asked to show your proof of valid visa and passport. It means some people could be detained and/or deported, which may or may not include some of your friends. And, ultimately, it means that yet again, you’ll be constantly reminded that you’re an outsider. But as Frank Sinatra would say, “That’s Life,” we just have to roll with the punches – or in this case, the fist. Join the discussion about this topic on the SHEX Forum, Lien retiré.
